State Champion Durham Youth Football Team Seeks Community Support for National Championship Trip

DURHAM, NC – At just 10 years old, David Lynch, a fourth-grader from Durham, knows the rewards of dedication and hard work. As a player for the Oak Grove Pirates 9U football team, he proudly shows off his championship ring, having worked hard and overcoming difficulties to become State Champions.

Now, Lynch and his teammates face a new challenge: traveling to Naples, Florida, for the AYF National Football Championship from Dec. 8-14.

The Oak Grove Pirates aren’t just a football team for these young athletes—they’re a lifeline. Parents like Tyra Brandon view the team as a positive influence that keeps kids away from trouble. “It’s been an opportunity for my kids to express their talent and stay out of the streets,” Brandon said. She has made personal sacrifices, even using bill money to ensure her sons have what they need to succeed on the field.

Head Coach Willie Parker, a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate and former Pittsburgh Steelers running back, instills discipline and life lessons in the players. “You can’t mess up in school, act a fool, and be a student-athlete,” Parker said.

The team is working to raise $50,000 to cover travel, lodging, food, and registration costs for 22 players and their families. For many, this trip will mark their first time on an airplane and offer a glimpse beyond Durham.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Sabrina Seymore, whose son plays on the team. “Just to see what’s out there beyond Durham, North Carolina, is important to me.” She is behind organizing an online fundraising effort to help the players get to the national championship.

The Oak Grove Pirates are calling on the community for support. Donations and sponsorships will help these young student-athletes continue chasing their dreams—and maybe return with another championship trophy.
