Durham County Welcomes Newly Elected Officials During Swearing-In Ceremony
Durham, N.C. – During Monday’s (Dec. 2) Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) Work Session, Durham County welcomed its newly elected officials with a ceremonial swearing-in following the 2024 General Election.
The session began with Register of Deeds Sharon Davis, who was sworn in for her third term by Chief District Court Judge Clayton Jones.
Next, the newly elected commissioners took their oaths of office:
- Commissioner Nida Allam, now in her second term, was sworn in by Associate Justice Allison Riggs of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
- Commissioners Michelle Burton, Wendy Jacobs, and Dr. Michael ‘Mike’ Lee were sworn in by North Carolina Superior Court Judge Shamieka Rhinehart. Burton and Lee are beginning their first terms, while Jacobs, the Board’s most senior commissioner, embarks on her third term.
- Commissioner Stephen Valentine, also beginning his first term, took his oath of office administered by Chief District Court Judge Clayton Jones.
Following the oaths, the BOCC unanimously elected Commissioner Nida Allam as Chair and Commissioner Dr. Mike Lee as Vice Chair for the 2024-2025 term. This marks Commissioner Allam’s second consecutive year as Board Chair.
During remarks, the commissioners emphasized a shared commitment to addressing community priorities, with a recurring theme of “Let’s get to work!”
