RALEIGH, NC – Executive Director of NC Counts Coalition Stacey Carless has been appointed to the U.S. Census Bureau’s prestigious National Advisory Committee (NAC). The NAC advises the Census Bureau on key topics, including strategies for counting historically undercounted populations, addressing racial and ethnic disparities, supporting rural communities, and ensuring data privacy and confidentiality.

Carless, a recognized leader in census advocacy, played a pivotal role in North Carolina’s successful 2020 Census outreach. She led the NC Counts Coalition in executing a statewide strategy focused on historically undercounted communities, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, low-income, and immigrant populations. Her efforts mobilized diverse communities, empowered trusted messengers, and implemented operational adjustments during the pandemic to ensure accurate data collection.

Under Carless’s leadership, NC Counts Coalition has become a trusted resource for government agencies and community organizations. Founded in 2017, the nonprofit organization advances systemic solutions for equity and justice in North Carolina through cross-sector partnerships. The coalition comprises over 130 multicultural and multiethnic organizations, most of which are led by members of historically undercounted populations.

Carless’s expertise extends beyond state borders, making her a prominent voice in national initiatives like the Census Equity Initiative and the Funders’ Committee for Civic Participation.

“I am honored to be selected to join the National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations and to collaborate with esteemed colleagues dedicated to the successful implementation of Census Bureau programs and surveys, including the decennial census.  I look forward to contributing my experience in census operations and community engagement to support efforts addressing the persistent barriers to participation faced by historically undercounted communities,” said Carless.  “My hope is to offer a valuable perspective that helps guide the development of strategies ensuring everyone is counted and represented.”

Carless’s appointment underscores her commitment to equitable representation and highlights North Carolina’s leadership in advancing accurate and inclusive census practices.
