Wayne County Family Uncovers Human Remains Behind Home, Investigation Ongoing
GOLDSBORO, NC — A chilling mystery is unfolding in Wayne County after human remains were discovered on two separate occasions in the same area behind a Goldsboro home. Both discoveries occurred on the 900 block of Dollard Town Road, leaving investigators searching for answers.
The unsettling series of events began on November 20 when Shareka Smith made a shocking discovery just feet from her home. Smith initially thought her dog, Boscoe, had unearthed a Halloween decoration, but she quickly realized the grim reality.
“When I came and seen it, I thought it was like Halloween decorations,” Smith told ABC11. “But then I thought, my God, it’s got to be a human head.”

Smith immediately called 911. When authorities arrived, they searched the surrounding woods but found no additional remains. However, just weeks later, Boscoe made another horrifying discovery: more human bones.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office believes the skull and bones belong to the same individual. Beyond that, little is known about the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding their death.
The discovery has left Smith and her family shaken. “I’m scared to go to the mailbox. I’m scared for my son to go to the bus stop,” Smith said. The family is hoping the mystery will eventually bring closure to those affected. “Whoever it is and their family members, I give my condolences to them. All I know is we’re living in a cold world, and we’ve got to be safe out here.”
The remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and to determine how long they had been in the area. Investigators continue to work on the case and urge anyone with information to come forward.
For now, the unanswered questions loom large over the community, with the Smith family left hoping for answers and some measure of peace for the person whose remains were uncovered.
