Chapel Hill Police Investigate Transit Bus Crash After Driver Leaves Bus Unattended

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Chapel Hill Police are investigating a crash involving a Chapel Hill Transit bus that occurred Friday afternoon on southbound Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Umstead Drive.

The incident happened around 2:48 p.m. when the driver reportedly exited the bus near Bolinwood Drive. The bus then began to roll unattended toward Umstead Drive, eventually coming to a stop after the crash.

One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to UNC Hospitals for treatment.

Chapel Hill Transit Director Brian Litchfield addressed the situation, saying, “We’re grateful no one was seriously hurt this afternoon. The safety of our customers is our greatest responsibility. Now, we turn our attention to learning what led to this.”

The driver has been placed on leave pending further investigation, which remains ongoing. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances that caused the bus to roll after the driver exited.

For now, Chapel Hill Transit officials emphasize their commitment to safety as they continue to review the incident.
