Raleigh Police Investigate Organized Car Theft Ring Linked to 90 Stolen Vehicles Valued at $2.5 Million
RALEIGH, NC – Raleigh Police are investigating an expansive car theft ring that spans multiple states, including South Carolina and Texas. According to a newly filed search warrant, this organized operation has reportedly stolen nearly 90 vehicles valued at approximately $2.5 million.
The thefts are not limited to high-end dealerships like BMW, Lamborghini, Infiniti, and Land Rover. The thieves also target everyday vehicles such as Ford and Chevys, with cars even being stolen directly from residential driveways.
Sharp Uptick in Car Thefts
Raleigh has seen a significant rise in car thefts over the past year, with close to 2,400 thefts reported in 2024 compared to 1,926 in 2023—an increase of more than 20%.
The theft ring uses sophisticated methods, including:
- Key swaps and RFID devices to bypass security systems.
- Fraudulent documents to create fake ownership.
- Reprogramming vehicle electronics to gain access.
- Cloning vehicles by using fake registration plates and VIN numbers to make stolen cars appear legitimate.
Task Force Results
In June, Raleigh Police established an Auto Theft Task Force to combat this growing nationwide trend. Since then, the task force has recovered:
- 86 stolen vehicles valued at over $2.3 million.
- 9 firearms.
- Drugs, including crack cocaine and fentanyl.
Protecting Your Vehicle
The National Insurance Crime Bureau recommends the following measures to safeguard vehicles:
- Lock your doors and activate your car alarm.
- Use steering wheel or brake pedal locks and bright-colored wheel locks.
- Install vehicle immobilizers like fuse cut-offs and kill switches for the starter, ignition, or fuel system.
- Invest in a GPS tracking system for real-time monitoring.
Nationwide Concern
This case highlights the alarming rise in sophisticated car theft operations across the country. Raleigh Police continue to work with federal authorities, with potential federal charges expected as the investigation progresses.
Stay vigilant and take proactive steps to protect your vehicle from becoming the next target of these high-tech thieves.
