Mother of 4-Year-Old Shooting Victim Arrested in Durham Incident

DURHAM, NC – A tragic shooting in Durham has left a 4-year-old child in critical condition and led to the arrest of the child’s mother, Vintasia Sowell, 24, who now faces charges of Felony Child Abuse and Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury.

Sowell, who is the mother of the young victim, was arrested and given a $50,000 secured bond following the incident.

The Shooting

On Saturday, January 4, 2025, at approximately 1:47 p.m., Durham Police Department officers responded to a shooting in the 3000 Block of E Weaver Street. Upon arrival, they learned that the 4-year-old victim had been transported to a local hospital in a personal vehicle after sustaining a gunshot wound.

The child remains in critical condition, and authorities are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Charges Against the Mother
