Durham Mourns the Loss of Dr. E. Lavonia Allison, Trailblazing Civil Rights Leader and Educator

DURHAM, NC – Dr. E. Lavonia Allison, a prominent Durham native and influential leader, passed away peacefully at her home on January 7, 2025. She was 94 years old. Dr. Allison dedicated her life to education, civil rights, and the advancement of the African American community in Durham and beyond.

Born and raised in Durham, Dr. Allison attended the segregated Hillside High School in the 1940s, where she was instilled with the belief that one’s character and capabilities are not defined by skin color. She furthered her education at Hampton Institute, joining Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. during her freshman year. Her commitment to service and leadership was evident early on, influenced by her mother and the strong women leaders she encountered in her community.

In 1968, at the encouragement of her late husband, Ferdinand Vincent “Pete” Allison, Dr. Allison became the first woman to serve as First Vice Chair of the Durham County Democratic Party. She later chaired the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People (DCABP) for 14 years, where she was instrumental in vetting candidates for public office and advocating for the rights and advancement of Black residents in Durham.

Dr. Allison was recognized throughout her career for her unwavering commitment to justice and equality. She was honored with numerous awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neal at the DCABP’s 88th Annual Founders’ Day Banquet in August 2023.

Dr. Allison’s legacy is marked by her steadfast dedication to civil rights, education, and community leadership. Her life’s work has left an indelible impact on Durham and serves as an inspiration for future generations committed to the pursuit of equality and justice.
