Shaw University Names Lamar Manigo as New Head Football Coach After Series of Leadership Changes
Raleigh, NC – Shaw University has officially named Lamar Manigo as the new head football coach of the Shaw Bears, following a whirlwind of recent changes within the program. The announcement comes after the university parted ways with its previous head coach in December and named a replacement who later declined the position due to health reasons on January 1.
Coach Manigo, widely regarded as one of the most innovative minds in college football, returns to Shaw with a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to student-athlete development. He previously served as Shaw’s Offensive Coordinator from 2016 to 2021, where he led the Bears to some of the most productive offensive seasons in program history.
Most recently, Manigo held the roles of Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, and Quarterbacks Coach at Virginia State University, where he played a pivotal role in the Trojans’ resurgence, culminating in their appearance in the 2024 CIAA Championship game.
“We are excited to welcome Coach Lamar Manigo back to Shaw University,” said George Knox, Shaw’s Director of Athletics. “This has been a challenging period for our program, but we are confident that Coach Manigo’s leadership, innovative approach, and passion for the game will guide the Bears to a bright future.”
Manigo expressed enthusiasm about his return: “I am honored and excited to come back to Shaw University as head football coach. This is a homecoming for me, and I’m eager to work with our talented student-athletes to build a program that our university and alumni can take pride in.”
Shaw University will host an introductory press conference for Coach Manigo on January 21, 2025, at 11 AM in historic Estey Hall. During the event, Manigo will outline his vision for the program and address questions from the media and fans in attendance.
The announcement signals a new chapter for Shaw football as the program looks to move forward under Manigo’s leadership and dedication.
