Pelicans Suspend Former Duke Basketball Star Zion Williamson Amid Promising Comeback
NEW ORLEANS, LA – Just days after making a triumphant return to the court following a two-month injury layoff, Zion Williamson found himself sidelined again—not due to injury, but for a violation of team policies. The New Orleans Pelicans suspended the former Duke basketball star for Friday night’s 123-115 win over the Philadelphia 76ers, citing repeated issues, including a late arrival for the team’s flight to Philadelphia.
Head coach Willie Green confirmed that Williamson’s tardiness was part of a broader pattern that led to the suspension. “There were several occasions that led up to this,” Green explained. “That’s how we got to this decision.”
In a statement issued through the team, Williamson accepted full responsibility for his actions. “I take full responsibility for this suspension,” he said. “I’ve worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to [owner Gayle Benson], my teammates, and my coaches, and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization.”
The suspension temporarily halted the momentum Williamson had built with his return to the lineup, but the Pelicans expect him back for Sunday’s matchup against the Boston Celtics. Despite their struggles this season at 8-31, the team managed to rally without Williamson in Philadelphia. However, they continue to face challenges, as fellow Duke alum Brandon Ingram remains out with a left ankle sprain.
As the Pelicans prepare for their next game, all eyes will be on Williamson to see if he can put this setback behind him and focus on reestablishing his role as a cornerstone of the team.
