A man conducting business in the civil clerk’s office collapsed, suffering a head injury and ceasing to breathe. Deputies on duty at the courthouse were called and quickly responded, utilizing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) located in the courthouse and performing CPR while waiting for EMS to arrive.

Thanks to their swift actions, the man was revived and transported to a local hospital for further care.

“I am proud of the quick action these deputies took today,” said Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead. “They did exactly what they are trained to do when someone is in need of assistance. We all pray that the man they assisted today has a full recovery.”

Durham County Sheriff’s Office deputies are required to undergo bi-annual CPR and AED training to ensure they are prepared for emergencies like this one.
