Car Plows Through Crowd, 20+ Individuals Injured
A vehicle plowed into a crowd in Munich, Germany, on Thursday, injuring at least 28 individuals, as reported by multiple sources. According to a social media post from the police, “The driver was apprehended at the scene and currently poses no further threat.” Bavarian state Premier Markus Söder confirmed to the press that at least 28 people had been injured. Authorities are currently treating the incident as a “suspected attack,” according to Söder.
The event coincided with a trade union rally at Stilgmaierplatz, where law enforcement was already present. Prior to the incident, the driver reportedly “overtook a police vehicle with his car.” It is believed that he acted alone.
Among the seriously injured is a two-year-old child, who is receiving treatment at the Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital. A hospital spokesperson stated, “Doctors are currently fighting for the toddler’s life.”
A suspect has been detained in connection with the incident, but their identity remains undisclosed. The individual is believed to be a 24-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan. No motive has been provided yet.
According to the outlet, police were familiar with the suspect due to previous “drug and shoplifting offenses.”
This incident follows a similar tragedy in Germany last December, when a car rammed into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, resulting in two fatalities and numerous injuries.
Munich’s mayor, Dieter Reiter, expressed his concerns to the media, stating, “Many people have been injured, including children. I am deeply shocked. My thoughts are with the injured. The police have arrested the vehicle’s driver, but the exact circumstances remain unclear.”
