Charlotte USPS Employee and Accomplices Sentenced in $24M Stolen Check Scheme
CHARLOTTE, NC – A U.S. Postal Service employee and two co-conspirators are headed to prison for orchestrating a massive $24 million check theft scheme, federal authorities announced.
Nakedra Shannon, 30, and Desiray Carter, 30, both of Charlotte, were sentenced on February 6 to 60 months and 54 months in prison, respectively, followed by two years of supervised release. Their accomplice, Donell Gardner, 28, was sentenced last July to 54 months in prison and three years of supervised release. The trio must also pay $113,333.87 in restitution.
Inside the $24M Check Theft Operation
From March 2021 to July 2023, Shannon worked as a mail processing clerk at a USPS distribution center in Charlotte. Prosecutors say that between April and July 2023, she abused her position to steal incoming and outgoing checks, which Gardner and Carter then sold through Telegram, specifically the OG Glass House channel.
The scope of the scheme was staggering:
- Over $24 million in stolen checks
- More than $12 million in checks posted for sale online
- Over $8 million in stolen U.S. Treasury checks
Carter, who profited heavily from the operation, reportedly lived lavishly off the stolen checks, which were “washed” to remove ink and rewritten for fraudulent transactions.
Federal Agencies Crack Down
The case was investigated by:
- U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General
- U.S. Postal Inspection Service
- IRS-Criminal Investigation
- U.S. Department of Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Frick prosecuted the case.
With the sentencing finalized, officials are warning the public to stay vigilant against mail theft and check fraud, which have been rising nationwide.
