Cary Man Charged with Murder After Girlfriend Found Dead in Storage Facility Apartment
CARY, NC – A Cary man is facing murder charges after police discovered his girlfriend dead inside an apartment connected to a storage facility where she worked.

Cary Police responded to CubeSmart Storage on Trinity Road just before 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, where they found 41-year-old Rebecca Rene Carter deceased inside the on-site apartment she lived in. Carter, who managed the facility, was discovered after officers were called to the scene.

Police encountered 40-year-old Travis Wynton Huff, Carter’s boyfriend, at the location. Investigators say Huff made incriminating statements, leading to his arrest and murder charge.
Huff made his first court appearance Thursday at the Wake County Detention Center, where he was denied bond. Prosecutors noted he could face life in prison without parole or even the death penalty.
Friends and Colleagues Remember Carter and Stunned By Huff
Both Carter’s death and Huff’s arrest have left those who knew them struggling for answers.
Those who knew Carter describe her as kind-hearted and friendly.
“Very shocked, actually,” said Melvin Montgomery, a former colleague told ABC11. “She had a big heart, and everyone loved her.”
Montgomery, along with others, has been reaching out to Carter’s loved ones.
“I sent a message to her mother offering my condolences. I know she’s going through a lot right now.”
Friends and former colleagues of Huff say they are stunned after he was charged with the murder of his girlfriend.
Huff, who worked in the hotel industry, had been in a relationship with Carter for about two years, according to Kevin Thomas, a longtime friend and former coworker.
“I didn’t think this was something Travis was even capable of,” Thomas said Thursday, a day after Huff’s arrest.
Thomas revealed to WRAL that the couple had been living together, and nothing in Huff’s behavior had raised any red flags among their circle of friends.
“We all kind of keep in touch, and not one person can pinpoint when something went wrong or saw a change in his behavior.”
His last conversation with Huff was on January 16, when he briefly checked in on his friend.
“I asked him, ‘How’s everything with you and your girl?’ And he said, ‘We are okay.’ And I told him, ‘Well, I’m here if you need me.’”
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Carter’s death. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012.
