Pregnant Woman’s Boyfriend Shot, Killed by Vance County Deputy After High-Speed Chase
HENDERSON, NC – A Vance County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man on Saturday, February 22, following a high-speed chase that ended in Henderson. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) has taken over the case at the request of the Vance County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office of the Eleventh Prosecutorial District.
Incident Overview
Authorities confirmed that a Vance County deputy attempted to stop a vehicle around noon on Saturday. The driver, who has not yet been publicly identified, reportedly fled the traffic stop after the deputy ran his information and discovered he had an outstanding warrant.
According to Mae Bullock, the man’s seven-month pregnant girlfriend, they were on their way to the hospital for a medical emergency when the stop occurred.
What Witnesses and the Victim’s Girlfriend Say
Bullock told WRAL News that her boyfriend explained to the deputy that he needed to take her to the hospital and refused to exit the car. Moments later, he allegedly fled on foot, leading deputies on a chase.
- Bullock stated the deputies used mace during the altercation, which she protested due to her pregnancy.
- The man then got back into the car and drove away, leaving her behind on U.S. Highway 1.
- The chase continued into Henderson, where an altercation ensued, leading to the fatal shooting.
A local witness inside her home reported hearing three gunshots and seeing the man on the ground. “He had no sound, not even like he was in pain,” she told WRAL.
Ongoing Investigation & Community Reaction
The Henderson Police Department responded to the scene but was not involved in the use of force, according to officials. They secured the area until command staff from the Vance County Sheriff’s Office and NCSBI investigators arrived.
Bullock expressed outrage over the shooting, stating:
“They did not have any reason to shoot him for running. They could’ve tased him.”
Authorities have not yet released body camera footage or further details regarding the circumstances of the shooting. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is now leading the inquiry, and the Vance County Sheriff’s Office has pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available.
The case has sparked community concerns over law enforcement use of force, and local activists are calling for transparency in the investigation.
