Durham Rolls Out the Fun: Wheels Roller Skating Rink Grand Opening at Merrick-Moore Park!

Durham, NC – The wait is over! Wheels Roller Skating Rink is making its grand return, bringing back a beloved community staple with a fresh look, new partnerships, and a weekend full of celebrations!

Join Durham Parks & Recreation (DPR) and United Skates of America for the Ribbon Cutting & Grand Opening Ceremony on Thursday, February 27, at 6 p.m. at Merrick-Moore Park. The event will feature remarks from DPR leadership, city officials, representatives from United Skates of America, and renowned artist Dare Coulter, whose stunning exterior artwork transforms the Wheels facility into a visual masterpiece celebrating movement, community, and culture.

Coulter, a nationally recognized sculptor, muralist, and illustrator, is known for her powerful art that uplifts Black joy and history. Her vibrant murals at Wheels honor the legacy of roller skating in Durham while reflecting the energy and excitement of the newly revitalized space. Coulter’s breathtaking work showcases how art and community collide at this iconic skating destination.

Following the ribbon cutting, the first public skate session will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a live DJ. Discounted pre-sale tickets are available starting Thursday, February 20, at www.wheelsdurham.com—limited availability!

“This day has been a long time coming,” said Wade Walcutt, DPR Director. “Nearly everyone in Durham has a memory at Wheels, and we’re excited to give a new generation the chance to create their own.”

DPR has partnered with United Skates of America, a national leader in roller rink operations, to manage the new Wheels facility. This partnership ensures a safe, fun, and family-friendly experience for skaters of all ages.

Free shuttles will run from Merrick-Moore Park (starting at 5 p.m.). A clear bag policy is in effect, and all attendees 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult (21+) after 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
