Durham Police Arrest Suspect in Ellis Road Murder

DURHAM, NC – A man has been arrested in connection with the March 1 fatal shooting of Monteith Lowery, 27, on Ellis Road. Authorities say the victim was found with a gunshot wound and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

Durham Police have charged Derrick Lamont Earls, 26, with felony murder in connection with Lowery’s death.

Fatal Shooting on March 1

At approximately 5:01 a.m. on March 1, 2025, officers responded to a report of a gunshot wound in the 600 block of Ellis Road. Upon arrival, they discovered Lowery suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Suspect Apprehended

On March 13, 2025, the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested Earls in Burlington, NC, for outstanding warrants unrelated to this case. While he was being processed at the Durham County Jail, investigators obtained a felony murder warrant for Earls in connection with Lowery’s homicide.

Earls is currently being held without bond in the Durham County Jail.
