Road Rage Turns Deadly: Durham Man Fatally Shot on I-85 Off-Ramp
BUTNER, N.C. — A violent case of road rage ended in tragedy Monday evening when a Durham man was gunned down at a busy I-85 off-ramp, according to Butner police.
The chaos began just after 6:30 p.m., when officers were called to what was initially reported as a single-car crash at the intersection of Gate #2 Road and the northbound I-85 off-ramp. But before they even arrived, the call escalated—shots had been fired.
When officers reached the scene, they found 63-year-old Broderick Hines of Durham slumped inside his vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Duke University Medical Center by Granville EMS, but tragically, he didn’t survive.
Investigators say the fatal shooting stemmed from a heated road rage encounter that started along I-85 and spiraled out of control at the off-ramp. Witnesses reported seeing an orange Jeep Wrangler pull up alongside Hines’ vehicle, then gunfire erupted from the passenger side, striking Hines.

A swift investigation led authorities to two suspects: Maquita Blue (left) and Travis Randall Jones (right), both of Henderson. With the help of the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, the duo was apprehended and charged with first-degree murder.
They are now being held without bond at the Granville County Detention Center.
