3 Dead After Gunfire Leads to High-Speed Crash in Durham; Second Vehicle Still Missing
DURHAM, NC — What began as a report of shots fired between two vehicles in rural northern Durham ended in tragedy Sunday evening, when one of the cars involved crashed on U.S. 501 near Roxboro Street, leaving three people dead and several others injured. The second vehicle remains unaccounted for as the investigation continues.
Gunfire Report and Attempted Traffic Stop
Just before 6:30 p.m. on April 20, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting gunfire between two vehicles near the 8200 block of Ball Road. A patrol deputy responding to the scene soon spotted two vehicles matching the description traveling southbound on Roxboro Street.
As the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver of one of the vehicles—a black 2003 Infiniti—refused to stop and sped away. The second vehicle involved in the shooting has not been located.
Deadly Collision on Roxboro Street
At approximately 6:40 p.m., the fleeing Infiniti crossed the center line on U.S. 501 and struck a black Honda CR-V head-on, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The Honda was driven by Sandra Marie Moore, a resident of Bahama, NC.
The impact sent the Infiniti into a red Lincoln Navigator also traveling northbound. The Navigator was driven by David Aguilar Mora of Timberlake, with two passengers.
Victims Identified

The driver of the Infiniti, whose identity has not yet been released, and a passenger—Mercedes Toledo-Goss—were both ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.
-
Sandra Moore, the driver of the Honda CR-V, also died at the scene.
-
All three occupants of the Lincoln Navigator were transported to Duke University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have not yet confirmed how many total individuals were involved in the crash.
Investigation Ongoing
The crash is being investigated by both the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Durham County Sheriff’s Office as a possible result of gun-related violence leading to vehicular flight. Officials have not yet confirmed whether any weapons were found at the crash scene or the precise motive behind the earlier gunfire.
As of Monday morning, the second vehicle involved in the shooting has not been located.
