Adrienne Kelly Appointed Executive Director of Democracy North Carolina

MORRISVILLE, NC — The Board of Directors of Democracy North Carolina has officially appointed Adrienne Kelly as the organization’s new Executive Director, effective May 2025.
Proven Leadership, Vision for the Future
Adrienne Kelly has been with Democracy NC for over 7 years, navigating the organization through a rapidly shifting political and financial landscape. During her tenure, she has played a key role in growing the organization’s capacity and reinforcing its mission to defend and expand voting rights across North Carolina.
“The board firmly believes that Adrienne Kelly possesses the qualifications to lead our dynamic staff of policy advocates, researchers, and organizers,” said Board Chair Marcus Bass. “Adrienne has demonstrated the sound judgment and necessary skills to help us face these unprecedented times.”
A Deep Commitment to Democracy
In accepting the role, Kelly expressed gratitude and a strong commitment to Democracy NC’s mission:
“I am grateful and humbled for the opportunity to lead this stalwart organization,” said Kelly. “I’ve always believed in one person-one vote, and that all voices are to be honored at the ballot box and in their communities.”
She emphasized Democracy NC’s 30+ year legacy of advocating for legislative and administrative policies that protect voter access, voter safety, and voting rights while working hand-in-hand with communities.
A Unique Path to Advocacy
Raised in Harlem, New York, by a teacher and a police officer, Kelly was instilled early on with a sense of civic responsibility. She earned her B.A. from Wesleyan University and an M.B.A. from Harvard University, then spent two decades in the private sector with companies like IBM and Hewlett-Packard, and as the owner of a telecommunications business.
Before joining Democracy NC, she served as Chief Operating Officer of a national education nonprofit. Her leadership at Democracy NC has included:
- Expanding staff from 15 to 25 full-time employees
- Enhancing employee benefits and HR systems
- Improving financial oversight and reporting
- Overseeing an organizational office relocation aligned with strategic goals
Active in the Arts and Community
Beyond her professional life, Adrienne Kelly serves on the boards of the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County and the Raleigh Little Theatre. She is a strong advocate for the arts, education, and equity, continuing her family’s legacy of civic and cultural engagement.
Leading in Uncertain Times
With North Carolina facing challenges to election administration, voter access, and democratic norms, the board says Kelly is uniquely equipped to lead in this critical moment.
“Democracy NC has shown itself to be steadfast in defense of democracy,” Kelly said. “I look forward to advancing our collaboration with donors, volunteers, and partners in this work.”
