Taraji P. Henson to Make Broadway Debut Opposite Cedric the Entertainer in August Wilson Revival

NEW YORK, NY – Taraji P. Henson is heading to Broadway. The Golden Globe winner and Oscar-nominated actress will make her Broadway acting debut in a newly announced revival of August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, scheduled to open in Spring 2026. Joining her on stage is Cedric the Entertainer, marking his return to Broadway after a 16-year absence.

The production will be directed by Debbie Allen, a two-time Tony Award nominee and Emmy-winning icon whose 2008 Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof drew critical acclaim and record-breaking box office success. Allen’s return to the Broadway stage caps off a landmark year in which she was named a 2025 Honorary Oscar recipient and announced as the director and choreographer of the upcoming Polly: The Musical.
A Powerhouse Cast and Creative Team
In Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Henson and Cedric will portray Bertha and Seth Holly, a couple who run a boarding house in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, circa 1911, during the height of the Great Migration. The story centers on Herald Loomis, a mysterious man searching for his wife and for his sense of identity after being illegally enslaved for seven years by the infamous Joe Turner. As guests flow through the Hollys’ home, spiritual unrest, buried pain, and long-silenced truths begin to surface.
The production is being mounted by acclaimed Broadway producer Brian Anthony Moreland, whose previous Wilson revivals—The Piano Lesson and Othello—featured powerhouse casts including Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Brooks, and Denzel Washington.
“Joe Turner’s Come and Gone is Wilson’s seminal masterpiece—an unflinching exploration of pain, identity, and hope,” said Moreland. “With Debbie Allen’s visionary direction and this extraordinary cast, the entire company will present a performance that resonates deeply and lingers in the hearts and minds of all who experience it.”
A New Chapter for Taraji and Cedric

While best known for her work in film and television, Taraji P. Henson is no stranger to the stage. A Howard University graduate, Henson studied theater and previously served as a producer on Broadway’s Jaja’s African Hair Braiding. Her acting debut marks a full-circle moment in a career that has included standout performances in Empire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hidden Figures, and The Color Purple.
Cedric the Entertainer, a six-time NAACP Image Award winner and star of CBS’s The Neighborhood, will return to the Broadway stage for the first time since starring in American Buffalo in 2008. Though widely known for his comedy, Cedric’s role as Seth Holly signals a dramatic shift in tone—a challenge he’s long welcomed.
Revival of Wilson’s Spiritual Epic

Joe Turner’s Come and Gone is the second play in Wilson’s American Century Cycle, a legendary 10-play series chronicling the African American experience across each decade of the 20th century. First premiering on Broadway in 1988, the play is considered one of Wilson’s most poetic and spiritual works—a haunting reflection on memory, loss, and the long road to freedom.
As described by The New York Times, it is “a drama of indisputable greatness.”
The 2026 revival will be staged at a Shubert-owned Broadway theater, to be announced in the coming months. Additional casting has not yet been released.
Conclusion
With Taraji P. Henson making her long-awaited Broadway debut, Cedric the Entertainer’s return, and Debbie Allen at the helm, the 2026 revival of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone promises to be one of the most anticipated theatrical events of the decade. Backed by a proven producing team and rooted in one of August Wilson’s most profound works, this production will not only celebrate Black artistry but challenge audiences to reckon with the ghosts of America’s past and present.
