21-year-old Raleigh Man Arrested After Glenwood Avenue Shooting Leaves One Seriously Injured

RALEIGH, NC — A late-night shooting in Raleigh’s popular Glenwood South district left one person seriously injured and resulted in the arrest of a 21-year-old man now facing multiple felony charges.

Shooting Reported Early Saturday Morning

At approximately 1:38 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2025, Raleigh Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 500 block of Glenwood Avenue. Officers arrived to find a victim suffering from a gunshot wound, who was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

After further investigation, police identified the suspected shooter as 21-year-old Kenneth Edward Kirby Jr. Authorities say Kirby fired several rounds into a group of people, and one of the bullets struck the victim.

On Monday, July 7, Kirby was arrested and charged with the following offenses:

  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury
  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon With Intent to Kill
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Structure (4 counts)

Tied to Summer Action Plan 2025

This incident occurred just days before Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce presented his Summer Action Plan 2025 to city officials on Tuesday, July 10. The plan is designed to enhance public safety between June 1 and August 31, with a special focus on hospitality and nightlife corridors, such as Glenwood Avenue.

“The prompt arrest of this violent offender reaffirms the Raleigh Police Department’s commitment to achieving these stated goals,” the department said in a statement.

The Summer Action Plan also includes the deployment of enhanced crime-prevention technology, interagency collaboration, and outreach with community organizations.
