Durham Teen Wanted After Armed Carjacking at Chapel Hill Hotel; Linked to ATM Robbery

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Police are searching for a 16-year-old Durham teen who they say is “armed and dangerous” following a violent carjacking at a Chapel Hill hotel and a separate armed robbery involving a local ATM.

Shaun Derek Dunn, 16, of Durham, is wanted in connection with an armed carjacking that occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19 at The Sienna Hotel (1505 E. Franklin St.). According to Chapel Hill Police, three suspects held two victims at gunpoint, stole their vehicle, and left behind a previously stolen car. The stolen hotel vehicle was recovered two hours later in Durham.

Connected to Armed Robbery After ATM Use

Investigators believe Dunn and the other suspects are also responsible for an armed robbery that took place on Thursday night, July 17. A woman had just used an ATM at the Bank of America on Willow Drive and was followed home to the Old Chapel Hill Road area. There, three men robbed her at gunpoint, taking cash and credit cards before fleeing the scene.

Warrants Issued for Shaun Derek Dunn

Dunn faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Robbery with a dangerous weapon
  • Felony larceny
  • Felony conspiracy
  • Possession of stolen goods/property (2 counts)
  • Second-degree kidnapping

“We believe Shaun Dunn is armed and dangerous,” said Chapel Hill Police Chief Celisa Lehew. “If you see him, call 911 and do not approach him.”

Ongoing Investigation

Police are still working to identify the other two suspects involved in both the carjacking and robbery. Chief Lehew said, “Our investigators are working to identify other suspects in both cases, and I remain confident that we will continue to make progress.”
