Gloria Gaynor’s Ties to MAGA Republican Politics Spark Outrage After Kennedy Center Honor

Gloria Gaynor, selected by Donald Trump for a 2025 Kennedy Center Honor, is now facing criticism over her recent Republican campaign donations.

Disco icon Gloria Gaynor—whose anthem “I Will Survive” has long resonated with Black and LGBTQ+ audiences—has recently drawn intense scrutiny following her selection by President Donald Trump to receive a Kennedy Center Honor. The announcement, made in August, crept Gloria into a political spotlight that her fan base was unprepared for

According to Federal Election Commission records and reports from MeidasTouch and Black Enterprise, Gaynor (listed under her legal name, Gloria Fowles) donated nearly $22,000 to Republican candidates and right-wing groups between 2023 and 2024. Her contributions include notable figures such as House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senator Josh Hawley, Senator Ted Cruz, and Senator Marco Rubio, as well as to the New Journey PAC, which reportedly targets Black voters for MAGA-aligned causes.

For years, Gaynor appeared to keep politics at arm’s length. In a 2017 address to the Library of Congress, she declared, “I’m really not a political person,” and showed no obvious political leanings. Her only known prior donation was a modest $235 to Ben Carson in 2016

Her acceptance of the honor under Trump’s newly politically charged Kennedy Center administration has infuriated many fans, especially those among the LGBTQ+ and Black communities. The View co-host Ana Navarro urged Gaynor on Instagram to decline Trump’s award, labeling the president a “stain on the prestige and significance” of the honor

Social media reactions have been sharp and emotional:

Gaynor has remained publicly silent amid the growing backlash. As the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony approaches this December, it remains unclear whether she will confront the controversy head-on.
