Capitol Broadcasting Company to Take Over Five County Stadium in Zebulon in 2026
ZEBULON, N.C. – The Wake County Board of Commissioners and the Town of Zebulon scored a major win this week, unanimously approving Capitol Broadcasting Company (CBC) as the new operator of Five County Stadium, longtime home of the Carolina Mudcats. CBC will officially assume operations on Jan. 1, 2026, bringing its proven expertise in sports, entertainment, and redevelopment to Zebulon.
CBC Brings Proven Experience
CBC is no stranger to transforming sports and entertainment venues. The company developed the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham, as well as revitalized Rocky Mount Mills, all of which have become thriving community destinations.
“CBC has the knowledge and experience we need to turn Five County Stadium into a vibrant destination for residents and visitors,” said Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Susan Evans.
A Competitive Process
CBC was selected after a joint Request for Proposals (RFP) from Wake County and the Town of Zebulon. Three organizations submitted bids, but after careful review and months of negotiation, both boards awarded the 10-year lease to CBC.
“This outcome reflects the strength of our town and the value of Five County Stadium,” said Zebulon Mayor Glenn York. “I look forward to the positive impact this new chapter will bring.”
Lease and Future Use
Under the new contract, CBC will pay $710,000 to lease the stadium through 2035, assuming all annual operating costs such as insurance, utilities, and maintenance. Beginning in 2026, the stadium will host:
- Coastal Plain League baseball games
- Wake Technical Community College baseball, softball, and soccer
Additionally, CBC can earn credits for bringing in other large-scale events. The County and Town will invest approximately $9 million in upgrades between 2026 and 2027, including a new field, scoreboards, lighting, and fan-friendly spaces such as family play areas and social gathering zones.
Transition After the Mudcats’ Departure
The Carolina Mudcats will leave Zebulon after the 2025 season, moving to Wilson to play in a new stadium. This transition provides CBC with a unique opportunity to reimagine the 52-acre site, ensuring Five County Stadium remains a hub for sports, entertainment, and community events.
