Raleigh Man Sentenced to 16 Years for Cocaine Trafficking Operation: “He Never Learned His Lesson”

RALEIGH, N.C. – A federal judge has sentenced Wilbert Lee Howard III, 42, of Raleigh, to 16 years in federal prison for leading a large-scale cocaine trafficking ring in the Triangle region. Howard, who had multiple prior convictions, pleaded guilty in June 2025 and was sentenced last week.
Case Details
According to court records, from September 2023 to July 2024, Howard distributed approximately 14 kilograms of cocaine throughout Raleigh and surrounding communities. Investigators revealed he was sourcing kilograms of cocaine and redistributing them to dealers in the area.
Law enforcement conducted several traffic stops involving Howard’s associates, recovering cocaine, marijuana, and cash. On July 17, 2024, search warrants at properties tied to Howard uncovered additional cocaine, U.S. currency, and multiple firearms, including a shotgun and a 9mm handgun.
