About Durham CrimeStoppers
Durham CrimeStoppers is a nonprofit organization that gives community members a safe, anonymous way to report criminal activity and help make Durham a safer place to live, work, and play. The program is a partnership between the community, local media, law enforcement agencies, and area businesses working together to solve crimes. Tipsters can share information about unsolved crimes, wanted persons, or illegal drug activity by calling 919-683-1200 or submitting a tip online at durhamcrimestoppers.org — without ever having to reveal their identity. A volunteer board of directors, made up of Durham residents, oversees the program, establishes policies, raises funds, and determines the amount of rewards. If a tip leads to a felony arrest, the caller may be eligible for a cash reward ranging from $100 to $2,000, depending on the severity of the crime. By encouraging citizen involvement, CrimeStoppers recovers stolen property, removes illegal guns and drugs from the streets, and helps investigators close cases that might otherwise go unsolved.

I was a resident at the Urban Ministries homeless shelter in Durham, North Carolina, where I met a man named Tyrone, who I think was in a relationship with the woman who was stabbed to death. Tyrone, who appeared to be Puerto Rican, had issues with alcohol abuse, as did the woman, based on my observations. He presented himself as friendly but mentioned being recently released from jail in North Carolina without specifying the reason, and our conversations suggested possible prior convictions. I saw Tyrone and the woman, who I believe may be the deceased, multiple times near the Walmart where the incident occurred, and it seemed they were living on the streets or possibly in a wooded area. Tyrone initially stayed at the Urban Ministries Shelter but was later kicked out for reasons unknown to me. I would also encounter them at the Durham Transit Station and on the bus line that goes to Walmart. The woman seemed to have significant mental health problems.
