Durham License Plate Agency Closing Friday – Here’s Where to Go Instead
DURHAM, N.C. – Heads up, Durham drivers! The North Carolina License Plate Agency (LPA) at 5410 N.C. Hwy. 55, Suite AB, in the Greenwood Commons Shopping Center, will permanently close its doors at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, 2025. The agency, operated by Triangle Management Agency, Inc. under the leadership of Chris Wilson since 2015, is relocating – though its new address has yet to be announced.
This temporary closure means residents should plan ahead to avoid last-minute delays in renewing plates, transferring titles, or handling other DMV-related business.
Alternative Locations for Durham Drivers
While the Hwy. 55 office is closing, four other License Plate Agencies remain open nearby, ready to serve the public:
- Durham – 4215 University Dr., Suite 8
- Carrboro – 301 W. Main St., Suite 104
- Cary – 316 N. Academy St.
- Raleigh – 4121 New Bern Ave.
All LPAs are typically open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding state holidays.
Online Services Available
The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) reminds residents that many transactions — including registration renewals, property tax payments, and duplicate registration requests — can be completed quickly through its official online portal, helping drivers skip the line altogether.
Statewide Impact
This closing leaves 131 License Plate Agencies operating statewide, part of North Carolina’s extensive DMV network. The NCDMV acknowledged that wait times may increase briefly as customers adjust to visiting alternate locations.
The Bottom Line
Durham residents have less than a week to handle their in-person vehicle needs at the Hwy. 55 location before it closes. Stay tuned for updates on the agency’s new location as soon as they are available.
