Durham, N.C.Durham Technical Community College joined county officials and health-care partners on Tuesday, Oct. 28, to break ground on an 80,000-square-foot Health Sciences building, marking a major investment in Durham’s growing medical workforce pipeline.

The new facility represents a key milestone made possible by Durham County voters and Commissioners, who approved a $112.7 million bond referendum in 2022, a portion of which was earmarked for this transformational project.

State-of-the-Art Training for Health Care Careers

The Health Sciences building will house Durham Tech’s leading programs, including Nursing, Medical Assisting, Surgical Technology, Anesthesia Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Clinical Research, and Occupational Therapy Assistant.

The facility’s design features:

  • Four classrooms and two computer labs
  • 21 allied-health labs and simulation settings
  • 1,600 square feet of student collaboration areas
  • 14,000 square feet of academic support space
  • 1,500 square feet of building support areas

A Community Investment in Health and Workforce Development

Durham Tech President J.B. Buxton expressed deep gratitude for the community’s ongoing commitment to education and healthcare.

“We are grateful to the people of Durham County and our health care partners for their support in creating a facility that will serve our students and our community’s health needs,” said Buxton. “We are the only community college in the state that serves as a talent pipeline for two tertiary-level hospital systems, so a state-of-the-art facility is essential to continuing to train the highest-quality health care employees possible for this community.”

When complete, the Health Sciences building will strengthen Durham Tech’s role as a critical talent pipeline for the region’s top hospital systems and bolster Durham County’s long-term economic and public-health infrastructure.
