Armed Murder Suspect Still on the Run After Stabbing Craven County Deputy
VANCEBORO, N.C. — The search continues for Dominic Liam Connelly, 24, who remains on the run two days after allegedly stabbing a Craven County deputy at a Bojangles restaurant in Vanceboro. Connelly, wanted for the murder and first-degree arson of his grandmother, has evaded capture despite an intense, multi-agency manhunt involving K-9 units, drones, and helicopters. Three West Craven schools closed Oct. 30 out of an abundance of caution.
What Happened

Connelly Oct. 25 – Havelock fire & death: Deputies found Patricia Lopedote, 72, deceased at 2010 NC-101 after a structure fire. Investigators identified her grandson, Dominic Connelly, as the suspect. Warrants were issued for open count of murder, first-degree arson, and larceny of a motor vehicle.
- Oct. 28 – Vehicle located: Lopedote’s car was recovered unoccupied on Pine Tree Dr. in New Bern.
- Oct. 29 – Deputy attacked: After a tip placed Connelly at Bojangles (Vanceboro), a responding deputy was assaulted with a knife. Additional warrants now include attempted first-degree murder, felony assault on law enforcement causing serious injury, and resisting a public officer.
- Status: Connelly was last seen in dark clothing running toward Bailey Lane Apartments. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Community Impact
- School closures (Oct. 30): Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary, West Craven Middle, and West Craven High closed for students and staff. Sheriff Chip Hughes urged residents to “lay low” and exercise caution; a heavy law-enforcement presence will continue.
