Carolina Gold: Griot & Grey Owl Black Southern Writers Conference Arrives in Durham Nov. 7–9
Durham, NC — The Griot & Grey Owl Black Southern Writers Conference returns to the Bull City November 7–9, 2025, for a three-day celebration of storytelling, creativity, and community rooted in the heart and soul of the South.
This year’s theme, “Carolina Gold — Mining Black Stories from the Appalachia to the Gullah Coast,” highlights the depth and diversity of Black Southern voices shaping today’s cultural narrative.
A Weekend of Legacy, Language & Liberation
The conference opens Friday, November 7 at 6 p.m. at the Durham County Main Library — a free, community-access event that invites attendees to connect, reflect, and experience the spirit of Southern storytelling.
On Saturday, November 8, the energy continues at The American Underground (9 a.m.) with a Book & Vendor Fair, featuring authors, publishers, artisans, and organizations uplifting Black literature and culture.
Throughout the weekend, guests can expect:
- Workshops, panels, and live readings
- A sound bath experience promoting creative balance and renewal
- Book signings, networking, and an afterparty to close out the weekend in true Southern style

The 2025 lineup includes an impressive roster of acclaimed creatives and community leaders:
Jaki Shelton Green, Crystal Wilkinson, Donovan Livingston, Nnenna Freelon, Pierce Freelon, Vanessa Miller, Kamal E. Bell, James Stewart, and Omar Tyree (special guest).
Each brings a unique perspective to the ongoing conversation about Black art, history, and identity in the South.
