Three Violent Incidents in 48 Hours Keep Durham Police Busy Over the Weekend

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham authorities are investigating three separate violent incidents that unfolded across the city this weekend — a deadly discovery downtown, a shooting inside a fast-food restaurant, and a domestic assault — all within 48 hours.

Burger King Shooting on N.C. 55

A Sunday afternoon (Nov. 9) dispute at a Burger King on N.C. 55 ended with gunfire and the arrest of a 73-year-old woman.

Police said Patricia Anne Rogers, of Raleigh, shot an adult male with a .38 Special revolver during a disturbance just after noon.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Durham Police Department news release.

Rogers was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor discharge firearm within city limits. She was released on a $5,000 secured bond, and police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident.

Body Found Between Buildings Downtown

On Saturday afternoon, officers responded to the 500 block of East Pettigrew Street, where a body was discovered between two apartment buildings.
According to police, a maintenance worker found the deceased man while fire crews were responding to a small balcony fire nearby.

The victim’s identity and cause of death remain undetermined, and police have not said whether the death is being investigated as a homicide. No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

Arrest After Violent Dispute on Barbee Chapel Road

Just before 4:30 p.m. Friday, deputies responded to the 5100 block of Barbee Chapel Road after a verbal dispute turned violent, leaving a man with multiple cuts.
Deputies identified the suspect as 45-year-old Travis Rigsby, who fled the scene before being located and arrested.

Rigsby faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and is being held without bond in the Durham County Detention Center.
The victim’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

Community Reaction

The trio of weekend incidents underscores Durham’s continued struggle with neighborhood violence and rising public concern over safety. While none of the cases appear connected, residents are once again calling for stronger intervention and sustained community engagement to prevent future acts of violence.
