RALEIGH, NC – As the 2nd HBCU Triumph Gala prepares to celebrate legacy, leadership, and the transformative impact of HBCUs, one honoree stands out for his unwavering dedication to justice, democracy, and community empowerment: Marcus Bass. A dynamic advocate whose work uplifts communities across North Carolina and beyond, Bass embodies the spirit of resilience, service, and excellence that defines the HBCU tradition.

A Lifelong Commitment to Community & Justice

A proud native of Sampson County, Marcus Bass has built a career grounded in service, systems change, and the power of collective action. His leadership spans education, civic engagement, grassroots organizing, and statewide policy advocacy—always with a focus on creating equitable opportunities for Black communities.

As Deputy Director of the North Carolina Black Alliance and Executive Director of Advance Carolina, Bass leads strategic initiatives that strengthen civic participation, deepen political education, and advance policies centered on equity, racial justice, and community power. His work ensures that communities historically left out of policymaking are not only at the table—but are shaping the agenda.

Rooted in HBCU Excellence

A graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, Bass’ journey began as a student organizer committed to mobilizing young people and amplifying their voices. After graduation, he returned home to teach, mentor, and uplift the next generation—setting the stage for a lifetime of public service.

His advocacy experience includes key roles with the North Carolina Association of Educators, Common Cause, and Democracy North Carolina, where he championed nonpartisan voter engagement, improved access to the ballot box, and strengthened protections for democratic participation across the state.

A Leader Building Long-Term Change

Bass’ influence extends far beyond organizational walls. He serves on numerous boards and commissions, including his recent appointment as Chairman of the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission for the State of North Carolina—a powerful acknowledgment of his trusted leadership and commitment to civil rights.

A proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Bass serves as Vice President of his chapter, continuing the fraternity’s legacy of advocacy, scholarship, and service.
