Honorable Rosa Gill: A Legacy of Education, Leadership & Lifelong Public Service

RALEIGH, NC — Few leaders embody the power of education and public service like Representative Rosa U. Gill, a lifelong Wake County resident whose decades of dedication have shaped classrooms, communities, and state policy. From her early years as a math teacher to her distinguished tenure in the North Carolina House of Representatives, Gill’s journey reflects an unwavering commitment to equity, opportunity, and excellence in education.
A Foundation Built on Education
A proud product of the Wake County Public School System, Rosa Gill earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Shaw University, later completing advanced studies at North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University, and Duke University. Before entering politics, Gill devoted 24 years to education, teaching mathematics at Garner High School and Enloe Magnet High School, where she also served as student council advisor and coach for girls’ varsity tennis and track.
Her experience in the classroom gave her a deep understanding of the challenges faced by both students and educators—insight that would later define her political career.
From the Classroom to the Boardroom
In 1999, Gill was elected to the Wake County Board of Education, where she served for a decade, including terms as Chair and Vice Chair. Her leadership helped advance student achievement, strengthen school integration, improve student assignment policies, and secure funding for new facilities—most notably, a $1 million school bond for expansion and modernization.
Gill’s impact on local education policy cemented her reputation as a steady and solutions-focused leader deeply committed to the success of all children.
A Distinguished Political Career
