Hillsborough Man Charged After Deadly Shooting Inside Durham Convenience Store

DURHAM, N.C. — A man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 53-year-old John Henry Singleton, who was gunned down inside a Durham convenience store last month. Police announced the arrest as part of an ongoing homicide investigation that began on November 15, 2025.

Initial Incident: Victim Found Shot Inside Business

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on November 15, Durham police responded to a shooting inside a convenience store in the 1600 block of Morehead Avenue. Officers found an adult male suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds inside a business.

The victim, later identified as John Henry Singleton of Durham, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Police initially described the case as an active investigation and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Update: Suspect Arrested and Charged With Murder

On December 14, 2025, investigators arrested 52-year-old Hashim Black, of Hillsborough, and charged him with first-degree murder in Singleton’s death.

A warrant for Black’s arrest had been issued on November 19, just days after the shooting. According to jail records, Black was booked into the Durham County Detention Facility on Sunday (Dec. 14) and is being held without bond.

Black was scheduled for a first court appearance on Monday, but court documents show the case has been continued to a later date.
