Space Heater Fire Forces Evacuation at Shaw University Dorm in Raleigh
RALEIGH, N.C. — Students were evacuated Thursday night after a fire broke out inside a Shaw University residence hall, forcing the closure of the Dimple Newsome Living and Learning Center and raising additional concerns as the dorm had already been experiencing heating issues.
Fire Breaks Out on Third Floor
The fire was reported shortly after 7:15 p.m. at the dormitory located on Person Street. According to Raleigh Fire Department Battalion Chief Brandon Hopkins, crews arrived to find flames on the third floor of Building 724, the Dimple Newsome residence hall.
Firefighters used a ladder truck to extinguish the blaze.
No students or firefighters were injured, officials confirmed.
Cause Linked to Space Heater
Raleigh fire officials said the fire was caused by a space heater plugged into an extension cord.
Investigators also noted that the building’s fire alarm system was not operational when fire crews arrived. The incident remains under investigation.
Initial findings indicate the fire was likely the result of an electrical accident.
Dorm Already Facing Heating Issues
The Dimple Newsome residence hall had recently been experiencing heating and hot water problems, according to a statement previously released by Shaw University.
Following the fire, university officials confirmed the dorm will remain closed while repairs and safety assessments are completed.
In a statement Friday, Shaw University said:
“The University is actively arranging alternative housing accommodations for the students impacted. The residence hall will remain closed while thorough assessments and necessary repairs are completed.”
Students Relocated as Repairs Begin
University officials are working to relocate impacted students while evaluating structural damage and ensuring safety systems are restored before reopening the building.
The timeline for reopening has not yet been announced.
