Now, at 99 years old, Dr. Opal Lee — the “Grandmother of Juneteenth” — has been immortalized as a Barbie, cementing her legacy in the hands of a new generation.

As part of Barbie’s Inspiring Women collection, Mattel is honoring the lifelong activist whose relentless advocacy helped make Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021. The Opal Lee doll launches January 22, celebrating a woman whose walk toward justice became a national movement.

A Childhood Marked by Racism, A Life Defined by Purpose

At just 12 years old, Dr. Lee experienced racial terror firsthand when a white mob burned down her family’s newly purchased home in Fort Worth, Texas. The violent attack forced her family to flee — but it also planted the seeds of a lifelong commitment to justice.

That commitment culminated decades later in her boldest act yet.

The Walk That Changed History

At age 89, Dr. Lee began walking from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., in 2.5-mile increments — symbolizing the 2.5 years it took after the Emancipation Proclamation for freedom to reach enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865.

Her journey gathered national attention.
Her petition collected more than 1.5 million signatures.
And in 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday.

Dr. Lee’s activism reshaped American history — and earned her the enduring title, “Grandmother of Juneteenth.”

A Barbie That Represents Legacy, Not Just Fashion

Mattel’s Inspiring Women collection has previously honored icons such as Ida B. Wells, Madam C.J. Walker, and Venus Williams. Now, Dr. Lee joins their ranks — this time representing generational leadership, civil rights advocacy, and the power of elders.

When presented with the doll, Dr. Lee said she was “flabbergasted” and deeply moved by the recognition.

Her granddaughter, Dione Sims, noted that the doll represents something even bigger: a tangible opportunity for young girls — and senior citizens — to see themselves reflected in positions of influence and impact.

This is not simply a collectible.
It is cultural storytelling in plastic form.

A Moment That Matters for North Carolina

As North Carolina’s Juneteenth State Director, Phyllis Coley, NC Juneteenth State Director, sees this recognition as more than symbolic.

“Dr. Opal Lee’s legacy reminds us that Juneteenth is not just a date — it is a responsibility,” said Coley. “Her determination to walk for freedom inspires communities like ours across North Carolina to continue educating, organizing, and uplifting the true meaning of Juneteenth. This Barbie ensures her story will live in classrooms, homes, and conversations for generations.”

At a time when the history of Black freedom struggles continues to be debated and challenged, this cultural tribute reinforces the importance of preserving truth — and honoring those who fought for it.

Passing the Torch to the Next Generation

Dr. Lee’s message remains clear:
We are our brother’s keeper.

Her charge to young people is not passive remembrance — but active stewardship. Elders must share wisdom. Youth must listen, learn, and lead forward.

The Opal Lee Inspiring Women Barbie Doll will be available for purchase beginning January 22 at Mattel Shop.

And while it may sit on shelves, its message walks boldly forward.
