Durham Nativity School Announces 2019 Spring Event Honoree
Durham, NC – Durham Nativity School has selected local banker and community supporter, James Sansom, as its 2019 Spring Event honoree.
The entire Durham Nativity School (DNS) community will honor James’ commitment to the school and the Durham community at this year’s Spring Event celebration scheduled for Friday, April 26, 2019, at 6 pm, at the JB Duke Hotel (230 Science Dr.).
Sansom has been a longstanding, enthusiastic supporter and board member of Durham Nativity School from 2007 to 2018. He has been a positive mentor and role model to the young men who have attended the school and has served as a member of the Board’s Finance Committee.
Sansom descends from a family of trailblazers and philanthropists. He is the great-grandson of both Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore, the first black physician in Durham; and founder of Lincoln Hospital and entrepreneur, Mr. John Merrick. Together they founded North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. and were among a group of nine businessmen that founded Mechanics and Farmers Bank –two landmark black-owned Durham businesses. James Sansom has continued his family’s tireless philanthropic legacy through his volunteer work at Durham Nativity and participation on several boards and committees that promote positive change in Durham and the surrounding communities.

About Durham Nativity School
Durham Nativity School provides a tuition-free, enriched learning environment and a twelve-year support system for middle school boys. The students have the ability and commitment to achieve, but not the resources for a quality, independent school education. Durham Nativity School promotes a rigorous academic program and nurture the whole child to reach his potential through knowledge, moral values, learning skills, discipline, and character development. They instill the value of service for others as we build tomorrow’s role models and community leaders.
Durham Nativity School serves middle school boys who come from financially-challenged backgrounds. They provide a nurturing, but highly structured and academically challenging environment in which our students thrive. The school offers the students emotional, social, moral and intellectual support through small classes, an extended school day and school year program. Active parental involvement is required and they seek to hire faculty and staff fully dedicated to our mission and students.
Students are enrolled without regard to race, color, religion or ethnicity, but all must come from financially-disadvantaged families or qualify for the National School Lunch Program. Above all, the boys and their families must be committed to Durham Nativity School’s rigorous schedule and academics.
The Durham Nativity School is an independent, privately-funded middle school. It is not tuition driven, nor is it a charter or magnet school. They provide for their operating costs through individual, foundation, and corporate donations.
Durham Nativity School is educating boys who will break across barriers to become tomorrow’s leaders and role models within the community.
