While MedAssist usually has large scale Mobile Free Pharmacy events across the state each week. They had to take a step back and reevaluate how we are getting the much-needed over·the-counter medicine to individuals and families who are in need,” said Misty Moore, Senior Development Director. “We are working with the Community Health Coalition to really target those most affected and in need, and then curating an OTC Drop specifically for them. This is a response that is working well so far.”
The Mobile Free Pharmacy Program served 38,384 individuals last year across 43 counties. OTC Drops provide enough medicine to serve up to 1,000 individuals similar to the previous events. Each community determines local safety-net organizations that are open and actively serving the public to be drop points for the medicine.
Those organizations will then work with their patients and/or clients, assess their needs, and provide them with medications such as; allergy medicine, children’s, digestive aids, pain relief, vitamins, and more. Information is also included in the NC MedAssist Free Pharmacy Program which helps low-income individuals who are uninsured with their prescription medicine. “Community Health Coalition of Durham is very pleased to expand its mutually beneficial collaboration with NCMedAssist to serve the citizens of Durham County”, stated Dr. Christy Clayton, Board Executive for the Community Health Coalition. “We are committed to the overall health and well·being of our community and look for new ways to address the social determinants of health. Giving away over-the-counter medications many households need is yet another example of how the Community Health Coalition addresses health equity and health disparities.
