Angela Pinnix Pittman: Ebonettes 2020 “Dare to Make a Difference” Honoree
DURHAM, NC – Angela Pinnix Pittman has over thirty-nine years of service to her profession and community, with the majority of those years devoted to UNC Hospitals; she retired after working there for thirty-three years. Her ongoing repute of service encompasses working on the UNC Safety Seat Committee, the UNC Healthcare Systems Insurance and Benefits Committee, the North Carolina Women’s Hospital Infant Security System Committee, the Maternity Care Center/Newborn Women’s Hospital Leadership Dyad Group, and the Practical Nursing Advisory Committee for Durham Technical Community College.
Her many years of service led to the Ebonettes Service Club honoring Pittman with the 2020 “Dare to Make a Difference” Award (virtually)in the Service to Youth, Community, and Education category. She would have been honored at The Ebonettes Service Club’s 48th Founders Day that was scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2020. The Covid 19 pandemic canceled the celebration. Since 2002, the Founders Day program annually has showcased hard-working Durham citizens in the “Dare to Make A Difference Recognition Program.”
The other outstanding 2020 “Dare to Make a Difference” Honorees are Kasib Abdullah, Juliet Black, Garisha Davis, Joseph K. Davis, Jr., Rev. Dr. William M. McCoy, Jr., Queen Lawrence, Gail Taylor, and Judge Doretta Walker.
About Angela Pinnix Pittman
Angela Pittman, a native of Alabama, was raised in Burlington, NC. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from North Carolina A&T State University, and a Master of Business Administration/Health Care Management from the University of Phoenix with a specialty in the areas of health care infrastructure, health care strategic management, and health care finances.
Angela’s postsecondary and postgraduate studies have provided her with a wide range of professional, administrative, and leadership skills. She has experience as a clinical review specialist (Baby Friendly USA in Albany, NY); administrative nursing supervisor (University of North Carolina Women’s and Children’s Hospital); and patient service manager (Maternity Care Center, Newborn Nursery, High-Risk Antepartum Unit, and lactation services). Her other nursing experiences at UNC Hospitals include nurse educator, Newborn Nursery and staff nurse, surgical services nurse, and North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center nurse. Angela has also worked as an international board-certified lactation consultant.
Her certifications include clinical leadership, ALONE-Clinical Nurse Manager Leadership, National Highway Transportation and Safety Association Technician, and Lean Six Sigma Certification. Recently Angela’s article, “Nursing and Football: A Team Analogy,” was published in the Nurse Leader. Angela has an extensive record as a presenter in various professional arenas, such as the “New Breastfeeding Documentation Tool for Newborn Nursery” in Dallas, TX and the 26th Annual North Carolina Section Conference–AWHONN Faculty Conference. In July 2019, she was an invited expert panelist for the Baby Friendly USA.

During her tenure at UNC Hospitals, Angela received the “Plus Person Award,” was nominated for the “Nurse Manager of the Year” in both 2007 and 2009, was awarded the 2007 “Nursing Recognition Award” by the UNC School of Medicine, and was a nominee for the “Great 100 Nurses.”
Angela is a dedicated community worker and volunteer. Her community involvement spans the Triangle Area from performing blood pressure screenings and providing educational literature on non-hypertension at the Women’s Empowerment to serving as a representative for North Carolina Women’s Hospital at the Southern Women’s Show. She led the NC Women’s Hospital efforts in receiving the 2012 designation of the Baby Friendly USA, which is an international designation for maternity facilities that have created an optimal environment for appropriate infant feeding and mother-baby bonding.
She enjoys volunteering in the community through various nonprofit organizations. She is an active and committed member of Durham’s Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Chi Eta Pi Sorority, Inc. (nurses’ sorority); Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, Alpha Alpha Chapter; and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN).
A faithful member of Union Baptist Church, Angela works with several of the church’s ministries. She now serves as the vice-chair of the Trustee Board and is a member of the Security and Risk Management Committee, Women of Spirit (WOS), Stephen Ministry, Education Ministry, and the Sanctuary of Praise Mass Choir.
Angela’s unwavering involvement in her profession and community reflects her commitment as an “agent of service” for enhancing other quality of life outcomes. When asks about the motto that she lives by, she states the “Golden Rule” moral derived from Leviticus 19:18. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Angela Pinnix Pittman is the wife of Timothy Pittman, mother to Corey, and stepmother to Tyler. In her leisure time, she enjoys spending time with her dogs, Maxx and Kane, and reading various forms of literature.
