Wolfpack Blowout App State 13-2
RALIEGH, NC- The NC State Wolfpack moved to 11-11 on the season as they beat the Appalachian State Mountaineers 13-2 in the first meeting between the two teams since 2015.
At the bottom of the first, J.T. Jarret got the first hit for NC State after hitting a double that nearly soared over the stadium walls. He was called out, but after a challenge by NC State’s head coach, Elliott Avent, the ruling was overturned. Luca Tresh followed and started with an RBI that drove Jarret in.
In the bottom of the second inning, Devonte Brown hit a line drive over the center-field wall for a two-run homer as Tatum was sitting at first after a walk. The Wolfpack went into the third inning with a 3-0 lead.
Freshman, Chris Villaman started on the mound for the Wolfpack and through four innings had no hits. Villaman’s hot streak was snapped by the Mountaineers’ Hayden Cross with a single at the top of the fifth. Alex Leshock followed with a triple to the right-center that batted in Cross, putting App State on the board.
As App state brought in its fourth Pitcher in just five innings, Tyler McDonough sails the would-be savior, Shane Roberts, pitch over the right-center wall.
Heading into the sixth, the Wolfpack had a comfortable 4-1 lead over the Mountaineers.
In the bottom half of the sixth inning, NC State exploded for nine runs to extend the lead to 13-1. Jarrett started the scoring with a double down the right-field line, which drove in Brown for the run and advanced Tatum and Vojtech Mensik. McDonough’s single gave Brown room to run in and another single by Tresh rocketed Jarret in for the score.
Jose Torres’ single batted in McDonough and Tresh. Directly after, Johnny Butler’s double to the left advanced Torress while sending Austin Murr into the home plate.
With Mensik at-bat again, he sent a double down the left-field that drove in Butler and Torress, ending the 9-0 sixth inning for NC state.
At the top of the eight, the Mountaineers’ Kendell McGowan laced a single up the middle that drove in Bailey Welch and making the score 13-2.
This win pushes Coach Avent to 900 career wins.
NC State (11-11, 5-10, ACC) now focuses on the three-game series versus the Boston College Eagles coming up this weekend.
