Wolfpack Takes Down Stanford 10-4 in Game 1

OMAHA, NEB. – The NC State Wolfpack (36-18) tops ninth-seeded Stanford (38-16) with a 10-4 victory in game one at TD Ameritrade Park. The Wolfpack is in the College World Series for the first time since 2013 and the third time in program history.

NC State came into the game swinging, scoring two runs in the first. Junior first baseman Austin Murr singled up the middle to start the ball game. Junior left fielder Jonny Butler then homered to right field to give the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore third baseman Vojtech Mensik found his way on second by a throwing error in the second inning. Sophomore center fielder Tyler McDonough followed with a single to right field, scoring Mensik to extend the advantage to 3-0.

In the fourth inning, the Wolfpack doubled its lead to 6-0, beginning with a lead-off homer by junior right fielder Devonte Brown. Junior second baseman J.T. Jarrett reached on a fielder’s choice. Murr then singled through the left side, advancing Jarrett to second. Murr and Jarrett advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Butler then singled to right field, scoring Murr and Jarrett.

Stanford added a homer in the sixth and collected five hits to score three runs in the seventh inning to bring it to 6-4.

The Pack sent 10 to the plate in the ninth, scoring four with another hot inning for the 10-4 final. Butler finished off the day going 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, and five RBI’s.

Junior left hander’s Reid Johnston, and Evan Justice commanded the mound for the Pack. Johnston earned the win with his six-inning outing, allowing four runs, on six hits, with three errors and one walk, striking out five. Justice relived Johnston in the seventh, allowing no runs on two hits, retiring four.

With this evening’s victory, NC State advances to the winner’s bracket of the College World Series that will be played on Monday, June 28th.
