Durham Bulls Dietrich Enns Is On His Way To A Career Year
DURHAM NC – Dietrich Enns has enjoyed a productive 2021 campaign with the Durham Bulls thus far. Following the Bulls (44-20) snagging four victories in their six-game series versus the Jumbo Shrimp, Enns set the tone early. The 30-year-old got the nod in game two on Wednesday as the Bulls dominated the Jumbo Shrimp by a score of 4-2.
It marked Enns’s (5-1) ninth start and 12th appearance of the season. He managed to fire 5 one-hit innings surrendering just one walk and punched out eight batters. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced. Brian Navvarreto recorded the lone hit off the southpaw in the 5th inning off a line drive to shortstop. The impressive outing has put him at a 3-0 record in his first three starts in July, lasting precisely 5 innings in all of them. Not to mention he also has piled up 23 strikeouts in those 15, including a 12 strikeout game back on July 1st against the Stripers.
Enns has dealt with an up and down career after being selected in the 19th round by the New York Yankees in the 2012 MLB Draft. He has made two big-league appearances, including one start, both coming in 2017 with the Minnesota Twins. Neither outing resulted in a decision, and he has a 6.75 ERA in his 4 MLB innings. He is 52-39 with a 3.35 ERA in 715 1/3 innings pitched in his MiLB career.
Enns has posted a 5-1 record in 48 frames pitched in his first season with the Durham Bulls. He supports a 2.63 ERA striking out 55 and walking just 14. The only issue has been the long ball; he has given up five total, which has been responsible for more than half of his earned runs surrendered. If Enns continues his most recent surge, he would likely be on his way to a career year. It is unknown if he will catch the Rays’ eyes and get another crack at the show, but he certainly has what it takes to help the Bulls make a deep playoff run and chase a championship.
