Duke MBB to Face Oregon State in PK Tourney
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Duke men’s basketball team will play Oregon State on Thursday, Nov. 24 in the first round of the Phil Knight Legacy, as the bracket was announced Monday. The game tips at 3 p.m. ET at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Ore., and airs live on ESPN.
The Phil Knight Legacy is an eight-team early-season event comprised of elite Nike-sponsored teams, including Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Oregon State, Portland State, Purdue, West Virginia, and Xavier. The Blue Devils and Beavers will play either Florida or Xavier on Nov. 25, depending on first-round results. The teams will have Saturday off, with the final day of tournament play set for Sunday.
The event, hosted by Rip City Management, LLC., honors Nike founder Phil Knight and his contribution to the sport of basketball and is inspired by the success of the PK80 event in 2017. The inaugural PK80, which celebrated Knight’s 80th birthday, brought 16 top Nike-sponsored men’s teams to Portland divided into two brackets. Duke defeated Florida, 87-84, in the title game of the Motion Bracket.
The elite collection of teams competing in the 2022 PKL have combined for 199 NCAA Tournament appearances, 29 Final Fours, and seven NCAA titles – Duke has accounted for 43 NCAA appearances, 16 Final Fours, and five national championships.
Duke and Oregon State will matchup on the hardwood for just the third time in history and for the first time since 1963. The Blue Devils won both previous contests, an 85-63 victory on March 23, 1963, and a 71-61 win on Dec. 28, 1953. Duke’s last game against Florida was in the PK80 title game and the Blue Devils own a 14-4 overall series lead. Duke is 4-0 all-time against Xavier, with the team’s last meeting on Dec. 20, 2008, in East Rutherford, N.J. — an 82-64 Duke win.
The 2022 event features eight men’s teams, while four top women’s teams – Duke, Connecticut, Iowa, and Oregon State – will also compete in a four-team bracket. The venues for the 2022 event include the Moda Center – home of the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers, the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and the University of Portland’s Chilies Center.
