Wolfpack remain undefeated in dominant win over UConn

RALEIGH, N.C. — NC State Junior quarterback Devin Leary threw four touchdowns as the Wolfpack dominated the University of Connecticut Huskies 41-10 in Carter-Finley Stadium.

With the win, the Wolfpack (4-0, 0-0 ACC) extended their home winning streak to 13 straight home victories.

No. 12 ranked NC State entered the game on Saturday with a 12-game winning streak at Carter-Finley Stadium. That gives NC State the fifth-best active home winning streak in the FBS and is the second-longest in the history of Carter-Finley Stadium (which opened in 1966). NC State has not lost a home game since Nov. 6, 2020.

The Wolfpack got things started on the first play of the game as Leary found Senior wide receiver Thayer Thomas for a 75-yard touchdown. Thomas finished with a season-high five receptions for 115 yards.

On their next drive, NC State running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye rushed 20 yards up the sideline for a touchdown, giving the Wolfpack a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Sumo-Karngbaye followed up a career day last weekend against Texas Tech with just four carries for 49 yards and a touchdown.

The Pack defense dominated the Huskies from the opening drive as they held UConn to just 39 yards passing on the night. NC State’s defense was ranked fifth best in the country by Yahoo! Sports’ Pete Fiutak before the season.

The game was pretty much a blowout by halftime as big plays from wide receivers Devin Carter and Porter Rooks led to touchdowns for the Wolfpack. NC State comfortably led UConn 31-3 at halftime, as the Huskies managed to squeeze out their only touchdown in the late minutes of the game.

Offensively, the Huskies were led by a rushing attack that produced 121 rushing yards on 32 carries. Six different Huskies carried the ball tonight to reach that number.

Defensively, cornerback Durante Jones led UConn with 13 total tackles (6 solo) and a pass breakup.

This was only the third matchup between NC State & UConn on the gridiron and the first since 2012.

NC State will look to pull off an upset for the second year in a row next week as the Wolfpack make the trip to Death Valley to face a tough, No. 5 ranked Clemson team on the road on Saturday, October 1 with the kickoff time still TBA.
