VIDEO: Thieves Break Into Gas Station, Rip Out ATM Using SUV In Orange County

HILLSBOROUGH, NC – Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Chapel Hill police officers, investigated a break-in early this morning (June 6) at the Refuel gas station and convenience store on Highway 15-501 near the Chatham County line. Thieves broke the glass on the front door, wrapped a chain around an ATM machine, and used a large SUV to pull the machine out through the double doors.

Security footage reveals the first suspect approaching the business at 1:53 a.m. and gaining entry through the glass doors after several minutes of effort. Almost 15 minutes later, a white Chevy Suburban or Tahoe pulled up. Three people worked together to steal the ATM machine, causing considerable damage to the building. Based on debris found at the scene, it appears the vehicle traveled northbound on Smith Level Road toward Carrboro. Security footage showed the rear hatch of the vehicle was open as the SUV pulled away. The individuals wore masks, gloves, and jackets, obscuring identifying characteristics. A yellow crowbar was collected that was used to break the door for evidence. A glove was also found in the parking lot and collected.

Investigators believe this crime may be connected to a series of similar thefts across the state. Pat Gilchrist is the lead investigator.
