Biden Pledges Full Federal Support for NC’s Recovery After Hurricane Helene’s Devastation
RALEIGH, NC — On Wednesday, Oct. 2, President Joe Biden visited Raleigh to address the severe devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina. Following a helicopter tour over Asheville to survey the storm’s destruction, Biden assured the state of full federal support for recovery efforts.
Joined by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and NC Emergency Management (NCEM) Director William Ray, Biden emphasized the federal government’s commitment to helping North Carolina recover. He announced that the federal government would cover 100% of the state’s costs related to debris removal, shelter provision, food, and medicine for six months, a decision met with applause.
Biden stated, “The nation has your back. We’re not leaving until you’re fully back on your feet.” He also announced that 1,000 soldiers from Fort Liberty would reinforce North Carolina’s National Guard to expedite the delivery of supplies to affected areas.
Devastating Impact of Hurricane Helene
NCEM Director William Ray provided a detailed update on Hurricane Helene’s damage:
– Western NC had already received 9 inches of rain before Helene’s landfall.
– Yancey County was hit hardest, with 31 inches of rain during the storm.
– The state experienced 8 confirmed tornadoes.
– Over 1 million power outages occurred; this number has since been reduced to 350,000.
– 21 counties were placed under flash flood emergencies.
– 29 shelters have been opened, providing refuge for over 1,000 occupants.
– 30 mass feeding sites are distributing hot meals across 10 counties.
– 24 search and rescue teams are from NC, while 13 teams are from outside the state.
– 26 aircraft have delivered over 700,000 pounds of cargo to affected areas.
Biden concluded his speech by addressing climate change, calling out those who deny its impact, and praising those involved in relief efforts, ensuring North Carolina that recovery is the top priority.
