NCCU’s Strong Security Response Amid Two Unrelated Homecoming Shooting Incidents

DURHAM, NC – North Carolina Central University (NCCU) implemented an extensive security strategy during the Ultimate Homecoming Experience on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors. Despite comprehensive measures, two separate and unrelated shooting incidents disrupted the celebrations. NCCU Police, alongside local and state law enforcement, acted swiftly to manage the situations and maintain campus security.

Robust Security Protocol

Campus safety remains a top priority for NCCU. For Homecoming weekend, the NCCU Police Department organized a significant security presence with over 100 sworn officers and uniformed personnel from various agencies. Security measures included controlled access barriers, K-9 units, undercover officers, and drone surveillance to monitor high-traffic areas. The university also managed vehicle flow around campus with designated parking access points. More than 1,850 security cameras were actively monitored throughout the day, enhancing real-time surveillance.

Ahead of the event, NCCU shared vital information about game-day safety measures, including a clear bag policy and North Carolina’s alcohol laws, via email, social media, and the university website, ensuring that the campus community and guests were well-informed.

Prompt Response to Shooting Incidents

Despite thorough preparations, two isolated shooting incidents occurred. The first incident happened at approximately 7:43 p.m. when shots were fired near Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall. NCCU Police quickly issued an alert, and officers on site responded within seconds, aided by drone surveillance. No injuries were reported, though three shots were fired into the air. A suspect was taken into custody. The all-clear was given at 8:11 p.m., and the campus began to clear out for safety.

During the ongoing campus sweep, a second incident was reported around 8:59 p.m. near the Student Services Building on Eagle Campus Dr., where four individuals, including one NCCU student, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. NCCU Police immediately responded, and the campus was placed on lockdown until 11:48 p.m. when the all-clear was issued. These individuals have received medical attention at a local hospital.

Ongoing Investigation and Support Services

State and local law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the incidents. While the investigation is ongoing, NCCU remains committed to campus safety and expresses gratitude to all agencies involved in the response.

The university has support resources for students, faculty, and staff to utilize as needed. Students who would like to speak with a counselor may visit the NCCU Counseling Center during drop-in hours Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or call the NCCU Counseling Center’s 24-hour line at 919-530-7646. Faculty and staff may utilize the ComPsych guidance resources on the university’s HR page.
