DURHAM, NC—A high-speed chase spanning multiple counties ended in a dramatic crash in Durham on Monday, November 11, after the driver of a stolen vehicle evaded police and damaged utility infrastructure.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) reported that the pursuit began just before 2:30 p.m. in Durham County when a trooper attempted a traffic stop for a seatbelt violation on a black Chrysler Pacifica. The vehicle, later identified as stolen, sped away, leading authorities on a chase that continued into Wake County before looping back to Durham.
As the chase approached downtown Durham, state troopers withdrew, allowing Durham County deputies to pursue the vehicle. Witnesses reported that the driver, later identified as Michael Devon Hester, 27, of Creedmoor, was traveling at high speeds when he collided with a pickup truck and veered off the road, striking two utility poles at the intersection of Angier Avenue and Bingham Street.
