NCCU Police Leadership Lauded as Suspect in Homecoming Shooting Surrenders
DURHAM, NC – North Carolina Central University (NCCU) commends the diligent efforts of its Police Department and partner agencies as they bring closure to a critical phase of the investigation into the shooting during NCCU’s Ultimate Homecoming Experience on October 26, 2024.
On November 20, Jerrick Dennard Woods surrendered to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office after arrest warrants were issued in connection with the incident. The 20-year-old Woods faces several charges, including:
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon
- Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
- Discharging a Firearm on Educational Property
- Possession of a Gun on Educational Property
He is currently being held without bond at the Orange County Detention Center.
The shooting, which left four individuals—one of them an NCCU student—with non-life-threatening injuries, prompted an immediate and comprehensive investigation spearheaded by the NCCU Police Department. The university credits its campus police for their swift and strategic response, ensuring safety during a heavily attended homecoming weekend.
“The NCCU Police Department has demonstrated exemplary leadership, resilience, and commitment to justice throughout this investigation,” said an NCCU spokesperson. “Their efforts, alongside the cooperation of local and state law enforcement, underscore NCCU’s unwavering dedication to the safety and security of our campus community.”
While the investigation remains ongoing, the swift resolution in identifying and apprehending a suspect highlights the effectiveness of NCCU’s proactive safety measures and interagency collaboration.
